My Valentines

This year was super fun celebrating Valentine's Day at preschool with my Little Valentine.  It happened to be very cold that day...one thing we can definitely say we've had a winter this year! But with the frigid weather came a lot of sicknesses from her class. I'm thankful that as I make this post, Caris hasn't caught anything too serious this winter, just the usual runny noses but that's what Boogie Wipes are for, I love those wipes!

I also hosted my annual Vday Playdate with some of our friends. I'm always thankful for these friends who make the drive from Friendswood and Sugar Land in the middle of a weekday to come play with us.  Thanks Chiara, Donna, and Tiffany!

This "thing" called Determined Desire

Have I told you about these women?  Well, doesn't the one in the middle in the blue necklace look wise? Well she is! I may just want to grow up to be just like her.  Hubby and I  have known Lennie and her husband, Greg, for 5 years now. We met them at our former church when we first got married and they have become such dear friends of our family.  We basically stalked...I mean, followed them to our current church.  Two years ago as we were getting restless at our old church and were in the process of visiting local churches, hubby said let's visit HBC since the Glenns go there it can't be that bad.  Lennie and her husband have raised three daughters and have so much wisdom between the two of them it's almost not fair that they keep it to themselves.  So, they don't.  They are very committed to serving the body through their counseling experiences and Lennie's passion is to mentor women.  Well, a year ago, she approached me along with four other ladies from our church to start a mentoring "thing".  Well, sure I said, not knowing what this "thing" was really going to be about but it sounded good.  To make a long explanation short, we would meet once a week for 16 weeks.  We would have read through the Gospels(Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) all the way through 3 times, read 1 Proverb a day, 70 pages out of a book each week(we ended up reading 6 books total) and memorized one bible verse each week.  Then we would meet to discuss what God had taught us during that time.  Well, it may or may not sound like a lot but it was for me! For one, I'm not a reader...and it was more than I read even in college I would venture to bet because there were no Cliff Notes, hello!!! Yes, there were times I felt I was speed reading.  And the memory verses almost gave me anxiety attacks but I'm here to say if I did it anyone can do it!  For one thing, it gave me confidence to know that if I was to continue the reading and memory verses on my own I could do it again! Yes, it was all very structured but the best part of it was we were accountable to each other.  Did I maintain all I read, no! Was I perfect in memorizing my verses, negative! But I have learned some disciplines in reading God's Word and memorizing as well as meditating on His Word...lessons I hope to keep exercising!

Sooo...fast forward a year later, Lennie and her husband Greg, have retired and have moved to a small town still in Texas, thank God!  During the transition, they put their house up for sale, downsized their lovely home and basically sold most of their furniture.  Lennie had wonderful taste and collected some beautiful antique pieces so I asked her was it hard to sell them?  She said "no, they were just things".  But of course!  I forgot who I was talking to!

But Lennie's legacy lives on because this January the ladies that she mentored last Spring (including yours truly) are paying forward and mentoring a group of ladies at our church.  We are calling it Determined Desire...pretty much you need both to go through this.  I say mentoring but really I'm just passing the baton of what I gleaned during my season with Lennie.  Just the opposite, we are 3 weeks into it and I feel I'm learning so much from them.  Their commitment is encouraging and I am looking forward to what the Lord has in store for this group of women! Praise God for what He is stirring the hearts of the women in our church!  I couldn't be more thrilled to be a part of it!  We are doing the exact same reading schedule and books (these books are also posted on this blog).  And I have to tell you doing it the second time around is pretty much a blessing because I'm catching things I didn't get the first time around! I'm slow that way!  We are also mediating on 2 Peter 1: 5-8 " For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness, and to goodness knowledge; and to knowledge. self control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and brotherly kindness, love; For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ."  We will be going deep with what it means to "add on to our faith" these characteristics, if you will.  What does it mean to add on "goodness" to your faith, etc...And more specifically how will we apply this to our lives.  There will also be a different challenge for every 2 weeks.  The first one was Feasting on the Word. We could choose fasting on food or any other disciplines (TV, Internet, FaceBook, Blogging, etc...) but instead spend that time reading God's Word. Like one person said, there would be no need for diet programs if we feasted on God's Word as much as we feast on food.  So I will leave these little morsels as food for thought!

Twenty-ten, a year in review

I thought it would be fun to pick one picture from each month in the last year to remember the events that took place.  I still can't believe yet another year has gone by...also fun to see my 2 1/2 year old change physically but also developmentally.  I'm so glad we made the decision to enroll her in Mother's Day Out this year.  Her verbal skills has just taken off.  She can say all her alphabet, count 1-20, knows all her colors and shapes.  She is beginning to put all her words together to form sentences.  She loves all things LeapFrog, Dora, and Veggie Tales.  Then there's the potty training...not completely trained but we are making progress.  I had to turn my teacher brain off when it came to that!  By the time she turned 2 years old, I was like, let's get this show on the road and hit some milestones here!  Well, she did not want to have anything to do with it! Then here we are approaching 2 1/2 years and she is still hesitant but is willing to at least give it a try.  As I am making this post today, she has gone twice in the potty chair and both times she came up to me to tell me. I'm still insecure about nap/bed times and going out in public sans diapers but I know it will get there.  It's a good opportunity to practice patience and to encourage her through this because it's a huge step for her I know.

On another note, hubby is still plugging along at his job.  I hardly know any people that can say they love their job except for him.  Only he would enjoy research accounting....I on the other hand withdrew from Accounting 101 in college because it freaked my brain out!  Well, I did finally gird up and took it again since my Major was Business. If I knew I would end up married to an Accountant, I would of tried harder?  We praise God for His provision through hubby's job and couldn't be more blessed by it.  Also, hubby has taken on some extra responsibilities at church by heading up Ushering and we will be hosting a Life Group in our home in early February.  We feel honor and grateful for the opportunity.  I've been so proud of him for having a servant's heart and it has been a joy to serve alongside the rest of the body of Christ that God has positioned us with.  In addition, our church is now moving to a new location in February to a local middle school in our area.  Through a series of guidance from God, we are "following the pillar of cloud by day" so to speak.  We are very excited to see what God is up to in this coming year with our church.  Never a dull moment when you serve our God!

As for myself, in September I decided that I would join two business ventures because I was feeling guilty every time I went shopping! Kidding! Kinda! But we are planning for the future regarding Caris' education.  Sadly, public school won't be an option for us.  So we are researching home schooling as well as private school.  At least that is where it stands as of now.  My first venture is with a company called Initials, Inc. It is a 5 year old home party based business that specializes from purses, bags, back packs, canteens, to stationary to scarves.  What makes it unique is monogramming is always complimentary! I have also loved monogramming and accessories so I felt like it was a perfect fit for me.  That's all the pros.  The only con is I have to rely on friends to throw the parties.  I actually joined at a good time since Christmas was around the corner.  So it has been going well and I'm still enjoying the process.  The second venture is with Usborne Books.  It is very well known in the home schooling community so a lot of people are familiar with it.  I chose these two companies because I already buy these sort of things so why not invest in them as well.

So there you have it in a long post about what we are up to these days.  Between shuttling Caris to and from MDO during the week I'm also involved in a couple of women's bible study this Spring and I've decided I would start blogging on a regular basis to share what God is teaching me through this season.  I have nothing to offer or bring to the table except that the time is short and lately I've been convicted about how I am spending my time.  Maybe it has to do with reading John Piper's "Don't Waste Your Life" for the second time around!

Trip to the zoo

During Christmas break, we took a trip to the Zoo.  It happened to be during the week after Christmas.  It was the only day I saw in the forecast that it wouldn't rain so I thought we better go for it since daddy would be available.  Funny story to go with this day.  For one, it was a chilly day.   Before we left the house, hubby asks me, "Is Caris wearing her red coat?" I  thought I answered "yes!"  Then before we arrived, I noticed no red coat in the back seat.  Long story short, we each thought the other person would get her coat.  Soooo, moral of the story is always have a spare jacket in the car!  Thus, she's wearing her yellow back up jacket :) Well, it was funnier at the time!  On a side note, please excuse my boring animal pics.  It had been a while since we've been back to the zoo so I was camera happy!

Looking for some exotic birds

All the way from Chile, wow!

This would be Ugly Bird...not really but definitely interesting looking!

Children's petting area was a huge hit!
